Stories from Sunnydene

Schofield

Schofield Schofield a male cat came to our attention mid October 2009. A concerned member of the public took him in as he was in such a terrible state.

His whole body was covered with infected scabs and oozing blood and puss. He had scratched and bitten himself due to all the irritation he was suffering so much so he had hardly and fur left.

His rescuer could not keep him but tried to help him taking him to another well known animal rescue but they turned this sick bald cat away.

Her next port of call was a vet - who scanned the cat and when no chip was found told her to turn the cat loose !

Finally she came to us, we couldn't turn him away. We found a corner for this suffering animal although we have been pack to the gill with cats all year.

He has had his treatment and although a long way from being well we hope, in time, he will make a full recovery. He is still a sorry sight but at least he is warm and well fed and getting treatment for the flea allergy that has started all his troubles.

Schofield is in a cage in our office where it's nice and warm, here's a photo of him in his knitted jumper.

Eventually we hope to find Schofield a warm secure home.

Louis Three Legs

Louis Three Legs In July 2009 at the age of 17 months Louis came to The Hull Animal Welfare Trust for re homing with his brother Jake and their mum Daisy. They came in from the same household when their previous owner could no longer care for them.

Mum, a shy well-behaved collie cross found a new home practically the next day but unfortunately for Louis he hasn’t inherited his mum’s good looks or good manners and to this day he remains with us.

He was born with a deformed leg, the lower half hanging a right angles to the upper half, completely useless, not being able to put any weight on it. Complications set in and to cut a long story short Louis now has three legs not four.

This has not dampened Louis’s boisterous spirit, he continues to dive around like a dog demented, walks for miles never tiring, his favourite trick is to wait quietly seeming asleep until some unsuspecting person open his kennel door, like a flash he is through their legs and heads to his very favourite place - the kitchen - where he sticks his head straight into a open bag of food like a horse with a nosebag and gobbles down as much as he can before he is caught. His reach is phenomenal; any tasty titbit pushed to the back of the work surfaces is no problem for this lanky lad. Special meals, put aside for poorly dogs who need a little tempting to eat, all disappear they are another of his favourites. Anything to do with eating is his favourite

Louis’s saving grace is his fondness for people; he spends his days trying to attract anyone and everyone’s attention. He stand on his two hind legs with his one front leg and his head stuck through the bars on his door awaiting any pat or praise that may come his way.

He is looking for a home with experienced dog people - he is not a dog for a beginner. He needs basic training in good manners, he pulls on a lead and is a bit of a bull in a china shop but he is a quick learner especially if titbits are involved. He needs someone who can be with him most of the time and can harness his enthusiasm into a positive pursuit and provide an outlet for his energy

He is a handsome hairy boy and he knows it, our biggest wish is to see Louis in a home before Christmas (but watch out for your turkey).

UPDATE - LOUIS HAVE THANKFULLY BEEN RE HOMED AND HAS BEEN THERE SINCE 25TH NOVEMBER - HOPEFULLY HE WILL SETTLE DOWN AND FIT IN AS HE HAS GONE WITH THREE OTHER DOGS AND SEVEN CATS - WATCH THIS SPACE

Our Rodney

Our Rodney Rodney first came to the Trust as a stray in April 2008. This easygoing dog was quickly chosen and went to a new home, he was doing very well until he had a seizure. He was returned to the Trust in September 08 and at the age of approx 10 years and suffering fits you may think his future was bleak but you’d be wrong, four people immediately came forward to adopt him.

He went to his new home October 2008 and lives with his harem of three bitches. They immediately took to him, looking to him for leadership and guidance, they follow him around always letting him pass through doors first, never attempting to take his food from his bowl and letting him have first choice of everything.

In short Rodney is revered in his own home. Being the strong silent type he takes the responsibility of his harem in his stride always calm and quietly in control.

His origins are unknown, he looks like a Dachshund Border Collie cross but his most striking feature was his very long thick woolly coat.

About every three months he attends his beautician where his personal stylist Pat cuts and styles his hair as he drinks coffee from her mug as though its been made for him. At the end of the styling session he has a bath and blow dry and finally before leaving he has a rose spray on his newly manicured body.

On arrival home his harem rush to the gate to greet their leader, where has he been without them? Why did he leave them? What has he been doing? Why were the not allowed with him? Tails wagging, their noses stuck to his highly scented coat, could this really be Rodney? It looks like Rodney, acts like Rodney, definitely doesn’t smell like Rodney. They’re frantic is someone impersonating their leader? Have they a fraudster in their midst. Worried dogs mill about, unsure now, what can they do? Who can they trust?

Rodney calmly goes about his business but surreptitiously moves out of sight to the back of the garden where he has a secret roll in some rotting vegetation before returning to the kitchen.

His harem run forward, noses stuck on his coat again, AHHHHH IT IS RODNEY, THAT’S HIS SMELL, all returns to normal, dogs relax, sleeping position taken up once again.

Rodney’s home again.

Rodney little short legs step over the side of his bed. Settling down he quietly reflects on his high status in his new home.

A Star In The Making

A Star In The Making Barbara adopted Meg, a seven year old, tan whippet/lurcher cross from HAWT October 08. When Barbara read they were looking for a dog ‘actress’ to appear on stage at the Hull Truck Theatre she didn’t hesitate. Meg was chosen out of twenty budding pooches and appeared in her role at the beginning of August 09 in the musical The Hired Man by Melvyn Bragg. Meg was a resident at Sunnydene 2008 after her previous owners no longer wanted her. She was chosen because of her friendly confident disposition. Barbara says she’s sure Meg’s head has got bigger since the experience. Well done to Meg!
