Happy Endings

Lizzie

Lizzie Tinker is a 13 year old Toy Yorkshire Terrier who came to us on 25th March 2006 from HAWT at South Cave.

The kennels asked us to take her early as she needed to be with a happy home and someone who would care for her immediately. She had been a stray and had got herself in a state! She had matted hair, mammary lumps, fleas and she smelled horrid. You wouldn't have realised she was a Yorkie. We re named her Lizzie and cleaned her up.

She has had her fair share of ups and downs over the last three years and cost us a fortune but its been worth it as she's a little gem.

She has a heart problem and is on tablets, her lungs fill with water and she has to have them cleared. She has had the lumps removed (which thankfully are non cancerous) and all her teeth out due to abscesses with her jaw being wired too.

Despite all this she is as lively as anything and loves her place on the back of the sofa. No one can come by our house or to the door without a yapping bout from Lizzie. She loves her walks and once she feels the wind in her hair she comes home with a new lease of life! She is very pampered and loves her mince or chicken dinners. She has jumpers and doggy coats all in matching colours and goes to the groomer regularly. We wouldn't be without her and now she can live out her years in a happy home.

Asaph

Asaph Asaph is my lovely rescue German Shepherd. We got her from Hull Animal Welfare Trust in 2001 when she was approx two-and-a-half years old.

She was found as a stray and had just had puppies. According to our vet she also had what looked like cigarette burns in her ears (there are times when I wonder...) If she hadn't have been rescued by Hull Animal Welfare Trust she would have been put to sleep.

She is 'bomb proof' with people and sometimes visits schools with me. She seems to go into 'nanny' mode with very young children and enjoys playing with slightly older ones. She is also very sensitive to how people are feeling. The most memorable occasion was when I was working with a group of people and expected her to come in being fairly excited and say hello to everyone. She didn't. She ignored the rest of the group and went over to one lady quietly putting her head in the person's lap. I said 'she obviously thinks you need a cuddle' to which which the lady replied 'I do'. It turned out that the lady was suffering from severe depression. I hadn't realised but Asaph had. I also know that she can be relied upon for a comforting head on my knee if ever I need it.

Sadly we discovered that her hips were not very good when she was three years old. We have worked hard to keep the balance of her enjoying her life to the full without overdoing things and making her hips worse and at age ten she is still doing very well although we do have to keep an eye on how much she does.

She used to LOVE agility and it is a pity that I couldn't have done more of it with her as she would be an excellent competition dog. Her enthusiasm and keenness to work with you is a delight. Her other great love in life are toys - you can see her whole face light up. She is also currently competing at Novice level at Heelwork-to-Music.

After several years away from competing I have been very surprised at just how enthusiastic she has been about getting back in the ring again and at her first competition this year she won the 'Veteran Star' trophy for the highest placed Veteran dog of the day.

She has also developed a rather unfortunate habit of trying to make audiences laugh (she still does a reasonable amount of talks with me) and this usually involves her playing the fool! Ah well, she’s happy! She has also passed her Kennel Club Good Citizen Gold Award.

She has also grown from being rather stroppy with other dogs to being a great teacher of good manners to the puppies on our puppy walks. She would never hurt them but has an air about her that the youngsters (usually at the 6-months-old-what-can-I-get-away-with! stage) respect. Although she is not very tolerant of bad manners when meeting other dogs, she is quite happy to ignore barking, lunging and silliness from the other whilst on the lead.

She is a joy to live with. She is and will always be my loving, fun-filled, beautiful, sensitive-to-how-you're-feeling, very special girl. I really appreciate having a dog where we’ve come to know each other so well over the years and she’s such a good friend (and is lying at my feet as I write this.)

Mervin

Mervin Mervin has been in his home now for ten years.

Originally from the trust he was found under a garden shed in Alliance Avenue as a tiny kitten. A serious bout of cat 'flu left Mervin with squint eyes. This gives him the bog eyed look and makes him look even cuter.

He now lives out in the country with our Assistant Manger's friend and has the life of Riley.

Ben

Ben I was just looking at the Trust web site and thought it would be a good idea to update you on Ben who we adopted from the Trust in March 2005. At the time you were calling him Rambler and there wasn't much known about his background.

My husband and I came to look round the Trust two weeks after our fourteen year old dog Benny passed away....and we were feeling very lost and empty without him.

We saw some lovely dogs but none that we could connect with.....we actually noticed Ben just as we were deciding to leave and head for home.

This is a recent photo of Ben on Bridlington beach.....he likes to go there at least twice a day and loves nothing better then a good swim in the sea. He's made lots of new friends both human and the doggy variety.....he's a very sociable guy and attracts lots of attention with his handsome looks.

We've done some research on the internet and feel pretty certain that he has some Leonberger in him (a German breed) which could account for his good nature.

My husband and I love him very much....he helps to keep us young at heart.....and fit with all the walks he takes us on. Thank you for our lovely Ben!

Best Wishes Noreen and Kevin

Amos and Ted

Amos and Ted Cadbury and Bournville came in as unwanted when their original owner moved to a new house. They were with us many months mainly due to the fact we have so many rabbits to choose from.

They were a shy pair, seemingly not handled on a regular basis but that all changed when they were taken by Pat and John.

It took a while to bring them round but now live a life of freedom in their large garden, roaming at will during the day. As soon as John approaches with food it’s a race to see who gets to him first.

They share the garden with other rabbits, Barney aged 4 and Penny aged 5 as well a George and Alfie their two little canine friends.
